There's no native write support for NTFS in android, so I'm assuming there was a 3rd party driver installed on your previous version of android where it worked.
If you're not using this drive with anything else, format it ext4, that will work with android, other linux distros and macos. However, if you need to access it from a windows machine, as u/NedSc said, use exFAT. it's the only thing that will support large files and work with any OS.
Here's software to format large USB, Micro SD, etc to FAT for use in Android: http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?guiformat.htm
Search Google Play for "ntfs" and install the exFAT/NTFS plugin from Paragon and install "X-plore File Manager" then you will be able to read NTFS formatted USB devices.
Have you tried exFat?
