The biggest updates over the previous generation include new NVIDIA Tegra X1+ chip, which claims to be up to 25% faster, Dolby Vision & Dolby Atmos, and a new remote design that got rid of the touch bar and added physical buttons for power, menu, volume up/down, rewind & fast-forward (and a dedicated Netflix button, yuck). RAM is still 3GB.

Update : Link has been pulled now. Here is a video from ETA Prime: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFHJZi_vulw

Dedicated Netflix buttons are very annoying to me.

alkalinelito

Wtf is up with that button layout , It's horrendous .

That is the most unintuitive remote I ever seen.

Rewind & fast-forward, should be left and right -horizontal-, not vertical.

joe603

AI upscaling and Dolby Vision/Atmos are enough for me to buy this on day 1. If those things don't matter to you then no point in upgrading

knotthatone

The new remote has power and volume buttons! Hooray!

It's also a weird triangle, but I can forgive that if it takes normal (AA or AAA) batteries.

Edit: Confirmed, AAA batteries!

On the one hand, I'm thrilled they got rid of that stupid touch bar that I was always accidentally activating and I don't want to complain because I've been wishing for an updated remote for a long time, but on the other hand, I don't really want to control my TV with a Toblerone, and the new button layout is just...oddly unintuitive.

Day one buy for me, if only because of Dolby Vision. I've been using my built in LG C8 apps for Plex and Netflix because of Vision support, it'll be nice to just have one source for everything including retro gaming and CBC + other Android TV apps now.

Unless they decide to be polite and offer Vision for existing Shield TV owners which would be even better

ifixpedals

The link was apparently pulled. Anyone have the full specs and a photo?

lylesback2

I'm not a fan of the remote, seems like a lower quality version compared to their first generation.

CuvisTheConqueror

I love the new remote. It looks far more functional than the old one. Sticking with 3GB of RAM is slightly disappointing, but considering that TV boxes don't really need to multitask like computers and phones do, it probably won't be much of a concern practically.

What interests me more is that this is being sold as the "Shield TV Pro". It looks like it's a replacement for the current Shield TV base model, so I guess that confirms that there will be a smaller, less expensive model.

TheRealSilverBlade

When will this be released officially in Canada ?

werdmouf

Disappointing, as expected.

asifkhan1804

Is new Shield TV offering 4k HDR support in YouTube????

mjr2015

bought, thanks.

sarhoshamiral

Doesn't the current one support Atmos already? I am fairly sure I can output atmos streams from it to through my receiver (ie reciever says it is decoding Atmos)

djl_ford313

Hopefully there's hdr for YouTube

nickm_27

How much storage does it have?

tb21666

That's what the remote finder apk is for..? And it's fugly, at that.. nice triangle .

As if the rest wasn't enough, they really lost me at the Netflix button, any preset button really.

This pales in comparison to all my 3rd party remotes.

johnestan

Dobly Vision support! Thank goodness finally. The shield will be the ultimate plex box with Dolby Atmos and Dobly Vision support. Now if only we could get surround sound or 4k in the hulu app, or atmos in the netflix app, or hdr in the youtube app. Prime video is fully supported but the app interface is atrocious. I can't wait for this to all smooth out. To get the best a streaming service has to offer you need a different box for each one.

elister

Oh wow, they made the remote worse. All they had to do was remove the touch bar and replace with up/down volume buttons. I already own two 2ndGen Shields, for 25% faster and shit remote, yeah I'll pass.

egy00813

So what's the meaning of "Pro" ?

Nvidia is planning to keep selling the 2017 model? or the sif be non-Pro model (???)

redarkane

i hope they release an update for the previous gen to support dolby vision files. it's hdmi 2.0. nothing has changed besides the die shrink on the cpu.

reddit_reaper

My body is ready because of the updated soc, really just a node update like the switch

flipside1o1

Meh

ShnizelInBag

Switch Pro confirmed

joazito

Shut up and take my money!

shsheikh

I'm surprised they went with $199 instead of matching the Apple TV 4K price.

Link is dead now but here is a video showing the listing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFHJZi_vulw

That remote is exactly the same what androidtv_rumour reported last month. Is that supporting always-on mic? I don't want to place a game pad everytime on the table.

mi7chy

About freaking time. I had the previous model and it was long in the tooth in regards to supporting newer video and audio codecs.

kihmathi

Taken down no longer there

himawa1y

Do you remember leaked new controller, "stormcaster" ?

exzrael

Did a screenshot of the entire Amazon page before it was taken down.

No big fan of the remote design, but it doesn't put me off. I love my shield, and will probably upgrade to this when it gets available in my country.

gbnz87

If that new remote is the same size as the current one the new shield looks like it will be significantly smaller.

SpinGee

Only hdmi 2.0 is bit of letdown, no full rgb just old yuv 422 compressing , not good for full dolby vision experience

IzxStoXSoiEVcXlpvWyt

$199 and that is the remote they can come up with? Yikes.

danrvm

I'm wondering if this is even legitimate.

hbc647

I can buy six of my boxes for the price of just one shield.. Haha
