90% of this subreddit's replies are: "just get an Nvidia Shield, bro!" because Google refuses to release a hero device for Android TV loyalists during their events since 2014

by foundfootagefan

On the other hand, we denounce with righteous indignation and dislike men who are so beguiled and demoralized by the charms of pleasure of the moment, so blinded by desire, that they cannot foresee the pain and trouble that are bound to ensue; and equal blame belongs to those who fail in their duty through weakness of will, which is the same as saying through shrinking from toil and pain.

Ekos640

Why should they when Nvidia does it for them?

ProgrammerPlus

Question is WHY? Is there a rule in your family that even your toothbrush has to be made by Google?

EDIT: So what is wrong with Shield? Yes, its good to have as many options as possible but it's not a necessity if the available options are good enough. People always talk about Shield and MiBox when it comes to Android TV and forget that many TVs do come with Android TV nowadays. So for average consumer, there are plenty options.

Google is a platform company and they are targeting Android TV as a platform for telcos. Google is NOT a consumer electronics company like Apple. It's a platform company like Microsoft. Yes, they make their own devices too, like Pixel and Surface, and we all know its just a hobby for them and they don't give a flying fuck even if no one buys them because Android and Windows is anyways on millions of devices made by other manufacturers.

Max_Roc

That'd be nice to see. In the meantime, just get the shield bro. Ha. It's amazing that same Android Tv box recommendation post is made time after time when there's only like a handful of them to choose from. As if we will change our tune and suggest the lower end hardware boxes will outperform the shield.

Alives

Except the remote on the shield is the worst thing ever.

rtm135

Then 90% of the people commenting are correct. Android TV would be a shit platform if it weren’t for Shield. And the sad part is that it’s all Google’s fault for allowing their hardware partners to use the platform on substandard hardware. I have 3 generations of Sony Android TVs and the OS is slow and glitchy on all of them. Why Sony didn’t partner with nVidia is beyond me, but I’ll never buy another Sony TV again. LG is where it’s at anyway.

JimmiVP

The problem with Shield: its too expensive. It costs 3 times more than the MiBox or other similar devices. Expensive enough to keep many from buying it, thus damaging the overall market for AndroidTV. The problem with MiBox: its too slow and are missing os-updates. A simple upgrade of the CPU wouldnt make it cost 3 times more than the Shield. I'm not really sure if Xiaomi are aware of the potential they have in this box. If they were they would care more about updating it. I read some comments about Google not being a hardware manufacturer. We all know they arent, but would be nice if they had some kind of baseline device (manufactured by whoever they choose).

Bardesss

Google had a partnership with Xiaomi 2 years ago. The follow-up of that TV box is a bang for buck! (Mi Box S) Google should implement minimum requirements. The manufacturers of televisions make a mess of it. Worthless SOCs, low storage and low RAM.

expectederor

the shield isn't for gaming exclusively. it can game if you want though.

it deserves its popularity because it has the best hardware, best features, and has bee supported for what, 4 years now?

NytronX

No. Google can barely keep up with the bugs of their software, we don't need them to make their software only work properly with their hardware (like the Apple model).

Google needs to stick with software.

J_T_Davis

Just get an Nvidia Shield, bro!

OwnStorm

Google was never in Gaming thing until Google Stadia. So, even if they will make Pixel Tv, it will be just streaming media which will be redundant as most of smart tv are coming with streaming box capability. Recently Motorola launched an Android Tv with Gaming controller.

Why people say, just get NVidia Shield Tv?

Shield Tv box is very well supported since last 4-5 years. One of top notch hardware. Addition to that able to access big game library, able to stream Games from PC. That makes people say Just get this thing you are done. Everyone on Android phone play games some time, so why not on Tv. Playing android games on Tv, Shield Tv so far first choice.

I had MiBox tv, which would be similar to probable Pixel Tv streaming box. A few month back I got Shield Tv. This is whole new level. Even when I am not using it for gaming, hardware and software are perfect.

Let see wheat Google is going to offer with Stadia.

BiggussDikkuss

Google's whole MO is to distribute near free Android OS software to as many hardware vendors as possible - and then sneak up on users and hover up viewing data and habits and onsell that for advertising purposes.

Their main focus is the advertising laden - customised, Operator Tier - Android TV OS - to be run on cheap Cable / Pay TV - boxes - that do not cost operators a fortune to manufacturer. Operators who care little for Tech like DolbyVision or HD / Atmos audio.

So now with each subsequent Android OS release, Google are optimising Android to be run OK on dirt cheap devices with as little as 1GB RAM. There really is nothing Tech cutting edge going on in the current Android TV OS space.

Smart TV's also are Not getting less powerful - the 2019 Sony's have really capable MediaTek chipsets in them these days to run a snappy Android TV Oreo OS that includes all the modern A/V tech.

If you want cutting edge streaming tech - the powerful AMLogic S922Z Chipset in the 2019 FireTV Cube is where it is at.

TheCrowGrandfather

I think part of the big reason Google isn't making Android TV hardware is because of Chromecast.

I know they're two completely separate things but Chromecasts are a big seller for Google. People love them, so Google is putting their focus where the people are.

Ericthegreat777

Seems it will be next year according to "hero" device leak.

wowcorny

And here I am sitting with my old trusty mi box

fleker2

I fail to see what Google would bring to the ecosystem that isn't already possible with partners like Nvidia. I'm satisfied with my Shield.

Terminator857

Although the Nexus player was pronounced dead many times, it was alive and kicking last year. You could still buy it last year.

Google branded Android TV box coming next year.

NavarrB

Considering the Nexus Player,

No thank you. SHIELD has been much better

BasicAlgae5

so nvidia makes a box that runs all the streaming apps in 4k res...

and yet ppl pay for all of them in the end of the month

yeah sounds very competitive

that's why piracy never dies

nolookjones

shield is perfect except for no dolby vision/youtube hdr support...

BradCOnReddit

If Google made one I wouldn't buy it. I owned a bunch of Nexus devices and Google ended up fucking me every time by forcing an update I didn't like then abandoning it quickly.

NavinRJohnson

Maybe Google has a no-compete agreement with NVidia.

fuzzywuzzypete

I'm rocking a mi box. It was my 1st Android TV. I'm more than happy to buy a shield, Google pixel tv, something else. However I really don't want to get the current shield cause I figure something has to be right around the corner. So I'll continue to use my mi box.

3pac_forsure

China sells a bunch of Android devices for TV, not to be confused with Android TV. I hear ya, I don't think Google is that serious into it, cause technically, tv boxes are on their way out as newer TVs are outfitted with good enough decoders and serious gaming is done on consoles like Nintendo and Xbox, and Android TV is a niche at best if you compare potential users (android cell phone users) to owning an Android Tv for media.

Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, are all baked into TV sets. I used a media box with my Sammy 4K Smart TV and just felt stupid since it felt redundant.

Not knocking on the Shield, I'm typing this from my Shield K1 tablet, so I love Nvidia's own hardware, but Shield TV felt super redundant, even with Nvidia Game streaming, it felt redundant...

superdroidtv

Google has reached out to 3rd parties in the past such as Asus with the Nexus player. They could easily bring an updated sub $100 box to market by reaching out to SDMC. This would cut a ton of r&d costs. There is no reason either this or this could be the next officially supported AndroidTV device.

battierpeeler

if you have money or are a pro user, get the shield

if you're on a budget or more of a casual user, get the mibox

shield sounds great to me (great specs, still updated) but it wasn't in my budget. mibox has been great overall and i have no regrets about getting it instead of splurging for the shield. mibox's delayed update and bug-filled releases were a problem for a few months but they eventually got it right. only problem i have with my mibox is the small on-device storage.

Pat_Headroom

I bought the Shield for it's capabilities of running as a dedicated plex server. But the gaming features are real nice for us folks who love retro gaming.

Ragerist

I feel like it's another one of Googles pet projects. Oh Apple has made a TV box. We need one too. So they made Android TV, set it out to the market. And then forgot about it. They haven't done anything to encourage app developers to make apps for the platform. They locked down the ability to change launcher (which is a major advantage to the Android system). And they have a long way to go in the area of user friendlieness, polish and seemless integration with the whole Android ecosystem

I really dislike the whole lockdown approach Apple lives by. But the user friendlieness, polish and (mostly) stability is unmatched.

I have the Shield TV (2015), and it's a great device. But can't recommended it to friends and family. Because it requires a lot of technical knowledge and patience.

I've had so many things break and malfunction on the shield TV.

Lost casting capabilities 4-5 updates ago and have been unable to get it working since.

Kodi broke, WiFi broke, CEC broke, one update introduced random hanging and reboots.

So I would love a Pixel TV device. If nothing else than to push Android TV platform to evolve and spread

scoinv6

I want Google to buy Roku

just_roc

Google is not a hardware company and do not intend to spend any of their resources on hardware.
With the advent of Cable boxes going to Android TV Google would be a fool not to focus on the development of yet another mainstream O/S.
Invidia is a hardware company and there is nothing wrong with their offering.
The Mi Box S is a great alternative for the budget minded market.
Why the hell would we want to disrupt what these companies do best to benefit all of us consumers?

syxbit

Agree completely. By not releasing a Pixel TV, Google is demonstrating they don't take Android TV seriously.

I wonder if Google thinks they can't beat the Shield.....

TheRealSilverBlade

Google also refuses to release anything except the Shield.

I'd wish they would release something to compete with the Fire sticks at a price level..

akisnet

They propose get a Shield because Nvidia is a US company. We live in an era of America First and trade wars. Now China became the black sheep. Sadly the politics came to tech sites and forums.

People asking what box to get to stream Netflix and the same guys here propose $190 Shield and in meantime Bestbuy has Mi box at $50.

Shield is very good but overpriced for a streaming box. I have Mi box 3 , Mi box S and Shield TV. At everyday navigation Shield gives you 3 sec faster loading anything. That's it. If someone is interesting to gaming and emulation Shield is the only solution.
