PSA: if you use google home with Nvidia shield, read this before upgrading to shield experience 8.0.1

by m0bot

After you upgrade, the change notes appear on the screen and mention that you may need to unlink the Shield from Google Home.

UNLINKING CAUSED ME TWO PROBLEMS

  1. Google Home would not find the Shield when I tried to relink. SOLUTION: Cast something to the shield (spotify, youtube, etc.), tap the notification on your device that reads "a device on your wifi is casting" which will open the Google Home app; press the 3 dots and choose link device.
  2. Likely caused by #1, I could not say "hey google, play X show" and have it play on Netflix. I would hear the dreaded "sorry, I can't play netflix on android tv yet" SOLUTION: Original source , on Shield, Settings > Apps > Scoll to bottom and select "show system apps", find the "Google" app, uninstall updates, reboot the shield, go to play store, update Google, and then these commands should work.

Hooray! All the time I've saved by using my voice to turn on the tv + launch a netflix show is now offset by all this troubleshooting. Seriously though this is brutal, and I could not believe the number of past posts I found when googling to troubleshoot these issues. Hopefully this helps someone.

Edit: spelling of shield, I managed to butcher it a couple times.

When Nvidia Spot support will come?

I don't see a "Google" app in my list of apps. There are things like Google backup transport, Google calendar sync, Google contacts sync... But not a standalone Google app. Where can i find it?

If the second solution works then youa re gong to be my MVP!

FYI - Another important part to add to the end of Step #2 (from the linked original source) is after installing updates for the Nvidia Google app, press the Mic button on the Nvidia remote and follow the Google Assistant welcome/setup prompts. After that Netflix casting should work.

Thank you so much! Just as a reminder, you may have to go through the assistant setup on the shield first before the google home will function properly. As stated in the post you linked to, use the mic button on the shield remote to get that working.

Thanks again!

So first of all; thank you very much for the tips! I'm really thankful!

Some tips for android TV users:

  • The app is called "google search" in the tv settings(as mentioned in by someone in this post.

  • If you want to reinstall it, look for: "google apps for Android TV" in the appstore.

  • As mentioned here as well you need to press the mic button on your remote after the installation, this triggers the initial setup for assistent, finish this!

  • after you're finished with the setup you need to give your tv personal results permissions, you can find this setting in the home app>right under(account)>settings>assistant>scroll all the way down>look for your tv>tap on your tv(now you see the setting). You can also tell the assistant on your tv to show you your photos or calander and it sends you a popup on your phone to turn it on(try asking for different personal things and keep asking it multiple times if it doesnt send you the settings, mine didn't work the first time)

  • After it has been activated it works instantly, you don't need to reboot or anything.

Hope this helps a bit!

I have not once gotten the Google Home to Shield commands to work. They always say that the device is unavailable.
