Can't disable "LET OTHERS CONTROL YOUR CAST MEDIA" setting, for my Android TV. Always says "Could not communicate with your Android TV."

I have a Sony 55" x900f Bravia Android TV, it's running Oreo.

I don't want other people at my home to see what I'm streaming so I'd like to disable "Let others control your cast media".

However, every time I try, the Google Home app gives me the same error.

I've tried rebooting my TV, resetting my TV. Clearing the cache of the Google Chromecast app. I've tried removing the TV from the home network and reconnecting it. I've tried removing the TV from the Google home app, and adding it back to the house. But nothing seems to work.

same here on Mi Box, it's always been like this for me though

Same here on a Nvidia Shield, I rent in a shared household and the other tenants constantly try to cast to my Shield thinking it's their device which is really annoying when your in the middle of watching something. I tried using a Network extender plug to set up a separate network just for my room but my devices still show up on the other network which I guess is because the plug is wired to the other network or something like that but still looking for a solution to this myself.

This has always been the case for Android TV.

Previously the chromecast app didn't display the setting toggle for Android TV devices, only for chromecasts. Then at some point a few years ago (I think when the chromecast app became the google home app) the setting became visible for Android TVs, likely by accident. Since that day it has always given the "Could not communicate with your Android TV" error.

Every couple weeks I check in hopes that it has been fixed.

quick research on google returned the same problem several times years ago

so I don't think devs even care about it anymore

Are you trying to prevent other people from connecting to your tv? If that's the case go to settings > apps> chromecast built-in and click on it. Then scroll down to disable. That will stop people from connecting to your tv. But it won't prevent you from connecting using your phone or tablet.
