help choosing a 4k passthrough capable box

by TheAgonist11

Hi, this may seem like a stupid question, but I have MKV files which are 4k and have dolby atmos sound. I have an atmos capable yamaha receiver. Is there a box out there that is powerful/clever enough to play such large mkv files and maybe even support atmos sound?

Thanks in advance people.

I've been in this rabbit hole for months.

The only decent box that can do the passthrough it is Nvidia Sheild. However, the picture quality is definitely inferior to Apple TV. Also, it doesn't support Dolby Vision.

As for the passthrough, the latest update broke it for me and many others.

I've been using Kodi + madVR + mpc-be for my needs and by far it is the best solution.

I want HDR, Dolby Atmos and the only box that can do both is Shield but the recent update has it craked up with frequent dropouts that kills the experience.

HTPC is the only way

You said u're still choosing a box right.

So I guess u're running those mkv files on your PC right.

Did u try VLC nightly builds?

As far as I know the "stable" version sucks at rendering 4k and this is well known.

The same for the VLC for ATV.

So I use MxPlayer. But I'm not sure about the Atmos support. This is new and probably has license problems.

So it depends on your OS (codecs) and unlike a BD-player I think u need to pay for it.

If that is all you specifically need then this following thread is for you:

I use an Odroid N2 running CoreELEC Kodi with a high quality Plug n Play MINIX A2 lite wireless remote.

You Flash the CE OS to an eMMC or microSDHC, plug in and power up and you are good to go.

I hate Firmware instability - which is now what has happened to the Nvidia Shield.
