VPN on SONY

by Condensed_Matter

Hi everyone, I have a Sony Android TV, and have used a VPN app in the past. It was always a little unstable (used to hard boot on startup if put in standby with the VPN on) however used to work reliably when watching TV.

There was an update last week, and the layout of the TV has entirely changed (not sure if it is just Sony or all Android TVs). Since then, the VPN application has become extremely unstable, causing a random reboot of the TV a few minutes later. I have tried NordVPN appication, and also configured OpenVPN, with the same results.

Does anyone know a solution to this? My router cannot be set up to run VPN, and I like how it is easy to toggle on and off with a built in app...

I would clear the cache then try again. Failing that I'd try clearing all data from your vpn app. If it's still unstable you could look at using a Raspberry Pi, connected to the VPN, as a gateway for your TV.

I use Express VPN (used it for 3 years now) on my 2015 Sony Barvia TV (Android).

I used to side load it but now the app appeared in the play store. Very happy, stable and most of all seamless

I was using PIA (Private internet access) for the last 12months or so... Worked great, and the app was very user friendly for a TV. It would sometimes cause the reboot when left on standby as well, but not always. It was hard to reproduce... This was not the reason I moved away from it though.

Switched to OpenVpn this week and so far so good.

I don't currently have mine set up like that but from memory I used Raspbian and installed OpenVPN. I'm not sure what I used to act as a gateway though...

Edit: I've just searched el goog for "raspberry pi VPN gateway" and there are a few tutorials. The one from ephams.com looks like it will do the trick!
