Tvplayer works fine for shield tv, freeview app don't work
You can also get something like a HDHomerun that can be picked up on live channels or use the getchannels app for regular terrestrial TV, if you happen to have plex pass you can set it up to be a DVR too!

Mobile phone / tablet only version of any App used on an Android TV device really are going to have problems as described below. Plus an extra Air mouse will normally be needed and then you have App control-ability problems.
Air mouse use on a TV screen is a right royal PITA with Android TV. Avoid.
The Freeview app seems to just link to the relevant streaming app like iPlayer etc so in theory it should work fine but I just tried sideloading it on my TV and found it hasn't been optimised. It's rotated 90 degrees and the controls don't work well.
