Calling out Discovery for ignoring Android TV; leaving HGTV/Food Network ATV apps to rot

by rhdelgado

Yes, I know you've probably read another Hulu Live Android TV post, or the actual Hulu press release. Sharing mine, because I used it as an opportunity to call out Discovery networks for ignoring the platform.

This news leaves us looking with side eyes at a few media companies. AT&T made a lot of news today, with changes to their streaming offerings. However there is still no Android TV app for the newly rebranded DirecTV Now, which turned into AT&T TV Now . Also, Discovery has yet to launch any of their channel apps on Android TV. Even worse, they have left HGTV and Food Network Android TV apps to rot. Those apps have lost features like live streaming, and seen many popular shows disappear from the apps without explanation. Hopefully, if peace and progress can be made on this platform for Hulu and Amazon, the others will come along eventually.

Been so mad at how bad these apps, which previously had been really good, have gotten. Fingers crossed that they get the message.

Available shows have definitely been disappearing from the Android TV app, there is almost nothing left in the library. The Android phone app has access to everything, and a live option.

It sucks that their isn't a native Investigation Discovery app. My wife really likes watching stuff on there. I did side load it but having to use the mouse to get around isn't really intuitive. It makes her not want to watch it on the shield because she just wants to sit back and use the remote.

I hope they'll have a surprise announcement someday in the not too distant future about more support for ATV versions of their apps. But man, Google has to stop screwing around and get the ball rolling, otherwise all these other companies won't get on board.

Fortunately you can cast but it's still super annoying

The best way to call them out is on Twitter and on their support emails.

The worst part is AT&T will soon launch a Android TV power STB to launch their AT&T Now TV service but still won't launch a universal Android TV app for DirecTV Now (AT&T TV Now). There should a lawsuit for such behavior.
