Netflix on unsupported Android TV device

by documenting

Hi,

I recently got a MAG425A box, I'm looking for a way to get Netflix working. I managed to sideload it by installing it via the APK, however, the app shuts me down as the device is not officially supported by Netflix. The MAG425A is a premium android TV box so I'm sure it should work technically.

How can I tweak either my device software or the Netflix APK. I'm sure there should be a line of code which is tweakable, just need to find a way to do it.

Any ideas? Online tutorials?

Many thanks

That is an Android tv device? Complain to Netflix.

This set-top box is officially certified by Google.

Even in Netflix support it says to contact them about errors of unsupported devices. They should just need to whitelist the build info of the device in their app.

If the device is rooted just modify the build.prop file so it reports as a different device.

You'll likely need to modify this every time you switch from Netflix to whatever the box uses, as it'll think it's whatever you faked it to and won't run its software

As I understood it SD should work with unlicensed devices, but HD won't.

I'd look for HD patched apps on mobilism or a2zapk or similar while complaining. Make sure it won't auto update. Prey they don't steal your login credentials if you are digging into shady links.

The Android TV APK won't work I think.

You could download the phone version APK and navigate with a mouse eventually but you won't get 1080p or 4k.

Your best bet would probably be to use Kodi with the Netflix add-on.

Netflix have cracked down HARD on non approved Netflix devices.

Workarounds to get 1080p or 4K, using the Android TV Netflix App no longer work or will be very unreliable. Even then devices have to be rooted.

You have to use a Netflix Approved, Google certified Android TV OS device.

As already mentioned, with Android if a device has legit Widevine L1 DRM certificates baked into Firmware (which the MAG should have) you can get 1080p, possibly 4K Netflix (only Netflix original content) by using the Kodi Netflix addon:

Thank you all for your helpful comments! I’ll go ahead with the Netflix Kodi approach as it seems the only feasible way to go!
